The word asbestos comes from the Greek term “unquenchable or inextinguishable” and the fibrous materials were used predominantly for their thermal and fire retardant properties. Due to its properties asbestos was used in many products, such as pipes, insulation, tiles and cement, especially in the 1940’s and 1960’s. Due to asbestos fibres being linked to a number of lung related diseases use was totally banned in the UK in 1999. Today asbestos containing materials can still be found in a huge number of buildings, including residential shops, hospitals, schools and factories throughout the UK.
